About EKG! :
Welcome to Muted Tones, featuring the representative works of Wattana Khommarath. Muted Tones was created in reference towards Wattana’s preference of muted color palettes along with the muted tonality of musical notes. On this site you will find insight into his professional and personal work.
Wattana acquired a BFA in Film/ Video and Character Animation from the California Institute of the Arts in 2002. He currently teaches full time at The Art Institute of California - San Diego. As a child he was given the name EKG! which is derived from the Laotian word Ekarath meaning “independence freedom fighter.” This nickname is the signature for all of his artwork and music. It serves as a reminder of his roots and war refugee background.
Wattana is an artist skilled in many disciplines such as traditional hand drawn animation, traditional painting (acrylics, oils, watercolors and gouache), digital painting (Photoshop and Painter), airbrushing, large scale murals, live painting, DJ-ing and playing the guitar. People often say to stay focused in one thing in life and do it well but he refuses to follow the status quo and is committed to be disciplined in the mastery of all his artistic interests.
The goal of Wattana's work is to create special pieces that clients will enjoy with their personal loved ones and new found friends. He hopes his work will serve as a purpose to continually push art making, encourage & inspire, teach and share art so that it reaches the artistic community and worldwide audience.
As in life, all things constantly change as will the content of Muted Tones. Please tune into the BLOG section of the site as it will keep you updated on the current direction in Wattana’s art making process.
